A new, less bulky design for an AFO
Proscript: The AFO has been used for many ankle and rear foot conditions. The biggest complaint from patients is he excessive bulk the bring to fitting the AFO and the foot into the shoe. I have redesigned the AFO to allow for better shoe and foot fit and control the pathology.
The Arizona and Richie AFO braces are commonly used in foot and ankle biomechanical therapy. I have resigned the AFO to incorporate the strength and lacing of the shoe into design to replace the bulk of the tradition AFO designs.
I have used this design for Posterior Tibial dysfunction, drop foot, Valgus Charcot ankle with non union and hardware failure in mid foot reconstruction. See image 1-3. Charcot Marie Tooth image 4-6.
Dr Shoemaker AFO. Sample patient has a poorly positioned ankle from Charcot disease. He is amazingly Golfing with the Dr Shoemaker AFO. HIS other option is to have his ankle fused. He as broken hardware from previous surgery by another doctor. He functioning with the Dr Shoemaker AFO.
Summary: This AFO IS Dr. Shoemaker's design. It is lower profile to fit into shoes better than Arizona or Richie braces which uses the stability of the shoe for anterior support.
